Our California Vacation…All the things to do and see in Mammoth Lakes!

It’s been a whirlwind these past couple of weeks! We ventured to California for our family vacation, came home to no air conditioning (compressor broke – but luckily was under warranty), and the boys started school (kindergarten and second grade). Needless to say, it’s been a bit chaotic.

Our California trip was amazing! I mean how could it not be, right?!? For our first adventure, we headed off to Mammoth Lakes, CA; a beautiful mountain town that we absolutely love. My parent’s retired up there and built a gorgeous cabin home. From the pine trees and fishing trips, to mountain tops and rock climbing, the kids literally had countless things to do. Here were some of our favorite activities…

Day Hike in Rock Creek

Rock Creek is about 30 minutes south of Mammoth, but very much worth the drive. You’ll drop into a valley surrounded by gorgeous mountains and creekside terrain. You can explore Mosquito Flats trail, go fishing, have a picnic by the river, or take a hike and explore the 7 lakes located in the valley. After working up an appetite, enjoy some lunch at one of our favorite little places, The Grill at Rock Creek Lakes Resort. Our family has been going here since I was about 4 years old and we have made many a fond memory. The eatery is located in the general store and has the cutest little diner and outdoor patio. You can grab a hot dog or a burger, but be sure to save room for their famous pies!

Lake Mary

For some more fun in the sun, I highly recommend renting a pontoon boat and going fishing on Lake Mary. It’s so peaceful and fun for everyone in the family! Before or after enjoying some time on the water, you can grab lunch at their delicious BBQ restaurant located right next door to the boat shop.

Adventure Center

The Adventure Center at Mammoth Lodge is by far the coolest summer playground for kids of all ages! Grab an adventure pass for the family and enjoy zip-lining, rock climbing, gold mining, a bungee trampoline, and if your little ones are feeling daring, a ropes course or mountain biking. If you’re feeling a little less adventurous or want to relax after some activities, you can take a beautiful scenic ride on the gondola.

Horseback Riding

Who doesn’t love a nice horseback ride through the woods? Take the family to the Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit and explore the mountains without breaking a sweat, lol. Older children and parents can take a trail ride (7+ yo) while the younger ones can “walk and lead” (3-6 yo).

Shopping, Restaurants and More in Mammoth

If you’re wanting a break from the outdoor activities, head up to explore the Village at Mammoth. There, you can shop the cute boutiques, have a coffee, and treat yourself to an ice cream cone at Hugs Ice Cream shop. After shopping, grab some dinner at Gomez’s restaurant and enjoy the delicious chips and salsa and their famous Mammoth Margarita.

Here are a couple more great restaurants around town…

The Mogul | Robertos Cafe | The Stove | John’s Pizza Works | Brasserie

If you enjoy golfing, be sure to check out Sierra Star Golf course. You’ll have an awesome time and will love the views of the sierras, even if your golf game isn’t up to par.

Hotels & Travel

There are many places to stay in Mammoth ranging from hotels to vacation rentals. Here are a few…

Westin Monache Resort | The Village Lodge | HomeAway Rentals

Lastly, when traveling to Mammoth, you can either drive or fly. The drive is approximately five and a half hours north of Los Angeles; once you get up to the US Hwy 395, you’ll pass through a few quaint mountain towns while taking in views of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. If you’re not up for driving, flying to Mammoth has just gotten easier! United Airlines now has daily flights to Mammoth Lakes year-round from LAX. The airport is just a few miles away from the town, making it super convenient.
