Creating your backyard retreat!

We are slowly settling in our new home in Texas and loving it! Each room needs a little something, but I’ve decided that with all the great summer deals going on, I’d focus on our backyard this week.

Now you might laugh at me, but when selecting my color palette, I try to imagine every season.  Weather it’s during the fall, winter, or spring, I want my patio to compliment that season.  So after some thought, I’ve decided to go with cream and green tones.  This way, it’ll be easier to add holiday accents without having to change the entire look.

I also want to add some greenery to the yard instead of looking at a fence, so I’ll be trying some simple ways to spruce up a fence.  In addition, I thought it’d be fun to do a raised garden for the our family to try our hand at gardening together.  I know some of you might be thinking, Kristen, it is too darn hot in Texas and you are not going to be outside! Trust me, I thought the same thing; however, my three kiddos could care less weather it’s hot or not, they just want to be outside playing under a blue sky!  Needless to say, we need to start working on the yard.

As of right now, our yard only consists of an 11×12’ covered patio, a large plot of grass, and a wood fence.  We plan on adding additional concrete work to extend the patio and add sidewalks on both sides of the patio, connecting it to the front of the house.  With all of the rain we get in Texas, this will help eliminate the muddy grass around the house.  We also plan on getting a swing set for the kids, upon which their imaginations are going wild!  They’re picturing a massive castle, while Vince and I are thinking “let’s just throw up a couple of swings and a slide,” lol.  We’ll see what we end up with!

This is a work in progress so I’ll update you as we complete each project.  For now, here is what I’m picking for the patio and fence.  Hope you find something you like or ideas that you can use in your yard too!
